This photos shows a left-seat throttle quadrant, similar to what I may build. It's Tracy Saylor's left hand throttle quadrant installed in his RV-6. The picture shows the 3-lever variety, but there is apparently also a 2-lever type. The units attache to the F-604, and are retrofittable. Both are pretty skinny: 1" from the F-604 at the base for the 2-lever, and 1.25" for the 3-lever version. The Falco has a left-seat throttle option. I haven't seen their interconnection system, but that's probably a good place to start when designing my own. There's also an article on this by Van, in the RVator (10/93). |

This is an RV-6 panel laid out with the right seat as the command seat. It's being built by Ross Briegleb and Hutch Hutchinson. You can see more of it at KitAirplaneForum.com . I'm considering building mine with the right seat as the command seat, too. Assuming you want to fly right-stick-left-throttle, it has several advantages. I don't need to make a separate throttle quadrant. I can operate radios and other controls without taking my hand from the stick (which I'm used to, as most of my hours are in the right seat of a stick-equipped airplane). And, if I choose to have manual flaps, I can operate the flap handle without taking my hand from the stick. Of course, I could just fly left-stick-right-throttle, as most RV-6 builders do. But I've tried it, and found that it felt very unnatural. That seems odd, because left-yoke-right- throttle feels fine. Also, I can often switch hands at things very easily. For example, I now mouse with my left hand, after developing an ergonomic problem with my right elbow, and it took only a few hours to feel totally natural. I can water ski with either foot forward just fine (though I still have a preference). On the other hand, it took me a long time to feel comfortable riding "fakey" on a snowboard. And I can't switch hit a baseball or a golf ball worth a damn. Go figure. So my mind is made up: I will definitely have right-stick-left- throttle. It's just a question of how I'll do it. |
