I hate to be the one that points to the real trouble - BUT- I have seen this
many times  and it happens right after someone inadvertantly engages the
starter AFTER the engine is already running - usually right while they are
checking the mags on run up and returning the key to the both position.  If
the key goes past the run postion  and hits the start mode the drive gear
will hit the ring gear and the nose housing gets broken. If the housing is
lucky enough to survive then the armature windings may get spun off from
being spun to fast.
